Ortus Recruitment is currently seeking a dedicated and motivated Learning Mentor to join an Alternative Provision setting in Lambeth. This is an excellent opportunity for an experienced Learning Mentor, Teaching Assistant, Behaviour Mentor, or someone with relevant transferable experience who is passionate about helping young people overcome barriers to learning.

The successful candidate will work closely with pupils across KS2 to KS4, providing both academic and pastoral support. You will play an important role in helping students build confidence, develop positive attitudes towards education and make progress both inside and outside the classroom.

About the Role

As a Learning Mentor, you will provide targeted support to pupils who may require additional guidance with their behaviour, engagement and learning. You will work alongside teaching staff and other professionals to help create a positive and structured learning environment.

Your responsibilities will include:

  • Providing individual and small-group support to pupils across KS2–KS4
  • Supporting students during lessons across core and foundation subjects
  • Developing positive relationships with pupils and acting as a consistent source of support
  • Helping students improve their confidence, motivation and engagement with learning
  • Supporting behaviour management and implementing appropriate strategies
  • Recognising individual needs and adapting your approach accordingly
  • Using effective de-escalation techniques when students become distressed or dysregulated
  • Working collaboratively with teachers, pastoral staff and external professionals
  • Encouraging pupils to develop greater independence and take ownership of their learning
  • Supporting students with additional needs, including SEMH, ADHD and ASC

What We’re Looking For

We are interested in hearing from candidates who have experience working with children or young people in an educational environment. Experience within Alternative Provision, SEN, behaviour support or pastoral care would be particularly useful, although transferable experience will also be considered.

To be considered, you will need:

  • Previous experience working in a school, college, primary or secondary setting
  • The right to work in the UK
  • A patient, resilient and supportive approach to working with young people
  • The ability to manage challenging behaviour calmly and professionally
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
  • Two suitable professional references
  • A current DBS registered on the Update Service, or willingness to complete a new enhanced DBS check
